Call for Papers

The Society for the Study of the Crusades and the Latin East is pleased to announce its 10th International Conference, Crusading Encounters, at Royal Holloway, University of London, 27 June – 1 July 2022.

Proposals for sessions of three 20-minute papers each on the theme ‘Crusading Encounters’, or for individual papers, are welcome. Themes could include, but are not limited to:

  • Interactions (real or imagined) between crusaders and indigenous peoples
  • Crusading archaeology
  • Impact of crusading on the environment or natural world
  • Intellectual influences of crusading on medicine, science, culture, language/literature
  • Intermarriage, travel and/or communication between peoples, borders, languages
  • Encounters with the crusading past

Paper proposals should consist of an approximately 250-word abstract and brief biographical note. Session proposals should include a session abstract and a title and brief abstract for each participant's paper. Round table proposals should include an abstract and the names and affiliations of the participants.

If you have already had a paper or session proposal accepted for the conference in 2020, you may of course stick with your original proposal but we ask that you resend the title and abstract to us to avoid any confusion.

We welcome fresh proposals from speakers at the 2021 PhD/Early career online conference who may already have delivered the paper they originally proposed.

Speakers must be members of the SSCLE.

Please note that there will be a maximum of three sessions in any one strand.

All applications for sessions and papers must be received at sscleconference@gmail.com by 1 December 2021.

Note:

At this stage of the planning process we are intending to hold the conference in hybrid in-person and online form for the benefit of those who are unable to travel to the UK. Nevertheless, we strongly encourage those planning to speak at the conference to aim to deliver their paper in person.

Social distancing regulations will in place throughout the conference, to conform with Royal Holloway’s pandemic mitigation policies. This means that the upper limit for attendance at the conference will be 200 people, and there will be limits on numbers in each of the lecture rooms.

Details of the day trip will follow once arrangements have been finalised.
