Teachers' Day

From 27 June to 1 July 2022 Royal Holloway, University of London will be hosting the 10th quadrennial international conference of the Society for the Study of the Crusades and the Latin East (SSCLE); only the second time this meeting has taken place in the UK. To mark this occasion and to take advantage of the presence of the world's leading crusade and crusade-related historians, we are hosting a special CPD event for Teachers on the afternoon that the conference begins.
We have invited four speakers whose work features across the various courses offered at school and college level, and who can also bring fresh and exciting perspectives to the subject of the crusades in a form that will be accessible and engaging in the classroom. Thus, a balance between topics that are familiar: Professor Andrew Jotischky on the Historiography of the Crusades; Professor Thomas Madden on the Fourth Crusade, and those that are emerging: Professor Carole Hillenbrand on Islam and the Crusades; Dr Natasha Hodgson on Women, Gender and the Crusades.
Alongside these sessions, we are proposing to hold a discussion session featuring contributions from the Subject Officers of the main exam boards, as well as a number of teachers and the academic panel; a rare occasion when these three groups are all together. We are interested to find what subjects the teachers would like to know more about, what they would like to see added or dropped from the courses, what new directions they might like covered, most notably regarding the teaching of the subject to younger year groups.
After the Teachers' event, there will be a short break before the opening plenary of the SSCLE conference, to which all attendees will be invited free of charge, along with a subsequent reception (again, free). Likewise, we will welcome you all with a lunch, from around 12.00. You may also be interested to know that a number of academic booksellers, including Cambridge University Press, Boydell, Routledge, Brill, Yale and Brepols, will be present, offering their books at discounted prices.
